Navigators of
biomedical language.
A team of linguists, translators and doctors that since 2013 has been building the reference terminology resources for biomedical communication.
Linguists, translators and healthcare professionals who make every resource possible.
We are professionals in lexicography, terminology, translation, writing and editing, specialised in the field of biomedical sciences. Our goal is to promote scientific communication of the highest quality and to facilitate access to biomedical information in different languages.
Medical language professionals spend a great deal of time searching for information scattered across the internet — information that is often essential for correctly understanding, writing or translating a text. For this reason, we decided to develop a library of rigorous terminology resources, continuously reviewed and designed for those who work with biomedical language as a profession.
The name
of the project.
The name Cosnautas® originates from Cos, the island where Hippocrates, father of Western medicine, was born, and from the idea of navigating the internet. The underlying metaphor: cosnautas are internet users interested in translating and writing biomedical texts, who turn to our resources for the information they need for their demanding work.

Equipping the biomedical language professional.
To provide biomedical language professionals with relevant, reliable, high-quality resources that enable them to work more effectively.
To use technology to facilitate access to, and effective searching of, high-quality specialised content.
Access to content of proven quality from any device, together with effective searching, multiplies a professional’s productivity; to that end, we decided to invest in cutting-edge software engineering to optimise access to reference content.
Scientific and linguistic rigour. All our resources are the work of accredited professionals, continuously reviewed.
Tools designed for the daily practice of the profession: fast search engines, clear annotations, intelligent hyperlinks.
We optimise every second of the medical translator and writer’s time. Less time searching, more time writing.
We engage with our users, incorporate their suggestions, and build an international community.
Knowing medicine is, to a great extent, knowing its specialised language — a language that has been evolving for twenty-five centuries.
Thirteen years navigating.
A project born of a community
Tremédica, the International Association of Translators and Editors in Medicine and Allied Sciences, is much more to Cosnautas than an institution close to us: it is our sister association. We share objectives, values and the same commitment to rigour, service and professional excellence.
A generous international community has grown up around it, in which many of our authors, contributors and friends have found a space to think, debate and share their knowledge. Much of that community has lent its voice to Panace@, an essential publication for anyone interested in translation, terminology and medical and scientific communication. Tremédica’s conferences have also been a place for meeting, learning and launching new initiatives. It was at one of them that the Cosnautas project first began to take shape.
For all these reasons, we gratefully acknowledge that our project could hardly have seen the light of day on its own. Tremédica has been our driving force, our inspiration and our shared home.
